ARCHITECTURE: THE OFFICE OF CORTESE & GILDER
The landscape for the Ecclesia redevelopment is shaped by an understanding of Gumbaynggirr Country and the local ecology of Coffs Harbour. It creates a welcoming public realm that supports gathering, movement and everyday connection, reinforcing the site’s role as a contemporary meeting place.
Across the public domain, Riding Lane and the surrounding streets, the landscape is conceived as a connected network of shaded paths, places to pause and moments of small scale refuge. Riding Lane becomes a gentle cultural corridor, encouraging people to slow down, meet and rest, while the forecourt is imagined as an open, inclusive space for community life, a contemporary interpretation of a campfire clearing.
Planting is led by large canopy natives and locally endemic species, bringing shade, biodiversity and a renewed sense of Country into the urban fabric. The reintroduction of Red Cedar (Toona ciliata) speaks to themes of renewal and care, supported by resilient species suited to the coastal climate.
Materials and landscape elements provide opportunities for cultural expression, to be developed with Gumbaynggirr Custodians and Indigenous artists during the next stages of the project. Together, the landscape aims to create a resilient and culturally grounded public realm, one that feels connected, generous and deeply rooted in place.
